Maintaining Africa’s Position on Sustainable Production & Consumption -Amcen19/2

Africa did not cause the plastic crisis, but through reduced production, global accountability, and sustainable consumption, it can help end it

This brief outlines Africa’s unified position on sustainable production and consumption of plastics, reaffirmed by African Ministers of Environment under AMCEN. It highlights that although Africa contributes minimally to global plastic production and consumption, it bears a disproportionate share of the environmental, health, climate, and economic impacts. The document calls for a strong, legally binding global plastics treaty that reduces plastic production at source, eliminates harmful polymers and chemicals, supports a safe circular economy, and rejects waste colonialism, while aligning with Africa’s development priorities and SDG 12.
